夏休みの宿題から気づいたこと
皆さんは、夏休みの宿題について、どんな思い出があるでしょうか？
宿題が出されてからコツコツこなしていく派、夏休み終わりに一気に片づける派、毎回遅れて提出していた派など、いろいろな人がいると思います。
このホームページを見ているのは大学生が多いと思うので、夏休みの宿題というワードに懐かしさを覚える方が多いのではないでしょうか。
さて私はどうかと言いますと、先日夏休みの宿題を友人から貰いました。
というのも、その友人と「お盆期間中することがなくて暇な日があるんだよね～」と話していたところ、「じゃあ宿題を出すからお盆の間にやって後で報告して」と言われてしまいました。
その宿題の内容は、「新しく本を一冊買って読む」ことです。
私は今まで本を読む習慣などが殆どなく、本屋にもあまり行ったことがないので、それを聞いたときは正直面倒だと感じました。
しぶしぶ近くの大きめの本屋に行ったのですが、中を見て回るだけで気持ちは楽しくなっていました。
本屋の中を散策すると、ジャンルを問わず私の興味を惹いてくる本が出てきます。
しかもそれが数歩歩くだけで不意に現れます。
普段自分から手に入れようとしない情報が入ってくることで、脳が気持ちよくなっているのを感じました。
結局宿題として購入した本は、有名作家のミステリー小説にしました。
現在半分ほど読んでいるのですが、なかなか面白いと思います。
ミステリーは先の展開が読めず、物語につながりそうな伏線もあって読んでいて楽しいことに気づきました。
今回は夏休みの宿題という半ば強制的な形でしたが、普段やらないようなことをやって新しい知識を入れるということは私にとって楽しいことであると気づきました。
自分が知っていることに詳しくなることはインターネットにより簡単になりましたが、知らないことに自分から触れていくのは難しいことだと思います。
今回は夏休みの宿題により新しいことに触れられましたが、今後は意識して自分の知らないいろいろなものに触れていきたいです。

What I Realized from My Summer Vacation Homework
What kind of memories do you all have about summer vacation homework? There are various types of people: those who steadily complete their homework as it is assigned, those who rush to finish it all at the end of summer, and those who are always late in turning it in. Since I imagine many of you reading this webpage are college students, the term "summer vacation homework" might bring back nostalgic memories.
As for me, I recently received some summer vacation homework from a friend. While we were talking about how we had nothing to do during the Obon holiday period, my friend said, "Well, I'll give you some homework to do over Obon, and you can report back to me afterward." The task was to "buy and read a new book." Honestly, I've never been much of a reader and seldom go to bookstores, so my initial reaction was that it sounded like a hassle.
Reluctantly, I went to a fairly large bookstore nearby. However, just browsing through the store started to lift my spirits. As I wandered through the aisles, books of all genres caught my eye. And the best part was that they would appear unexpectedly as I took a few steps. I felt invigorated by the influx of information I usually wouldn't seek out on my own.
In the end, the book I chose for my homework was a mystery novel by a well-known author. I'm about halfway through it now, and I find it quite engaging. I realized that the mystery genre is fun to read because I can't predict what will happen next, and there are plot twists that make the story interesting.
Although this was in the form of somewhat forced "summer vacation homework, " I realized that I actually enjoy doing things I normally wouldn't do and gaining new knowledge. The internet has made it easy to become an expert in things we already know, but it's challenging to take the initiative to explore the unknown. This time, summer vacation homework allowed me to encounter something new, and I want to consciously engage with various unknowns in the future.
